| Why Ukraine?

Food

Preparing shashlik, marinated meat on skewers.

I learned how to make borsht and vereniky with a friend and really enjoyed the Ukrainian food. (Well, most of it! Smoked prunes are definitely an acquired taste…and I don’t think I have acquired it yet. Smoked prunes showed up in stews and meatloaf… and I’ve heard it can be found in ice cream and as other delicacies… such as chocolate covered smoked prunes.)

Setting up a volleyball net at an all-school picnic.

At an all-school picnic shashlik was served complete with the classic tomatoes and cucumbers, grilled pork and chicken. It is marinated meat and veggies skewered and grilled over coals, much like shish kabobs.
